Divorce will ruin all mankind, says Rod (so wife No3 Penny should be safe!)

As the composer of hits like Maggie
May, You Wear It Well and The Killing Of Georgie, Rod Stewart has an
impressive songwriting pedigree.

Judged
on his recent output, though, you would never have guessed it. The past
two decades have found him interpreting (albeit rather well) the songs
of others — five volumes of his Great American Songbook, a Motown covers
CD and, last year, a Christmas album.

‘Fans
kept asking what had happened to my writing,’ he sighs. ‘They had put
up with the Great American Songbook — but they wanted something original
to make them proud to be a Rod Stewart fan again.’

The
problem was that Rod, 68, believed he was ‘finished’ as a writer. Then,
an old bandmate, Jim Cregan, popped over for Sunday lunch.

‘I
cringed when I saw he had his guitar with him,’ Rod recalls, running
his fingers through his familiar spiky mop-top as we chat in Central
London.

‘Oh f***, that
means writing some songs! He told me I’d become lazy. So we came up
with a number called Brighton Beach — and were immediately onto
something.

‘Writing my
autobiography, Rod, also got my mind racing. I was getting up in the
night, writing things down. Before I knew it, I had an album.’

That
album, Time, out on Monday, features 11 Stewart-penned songs (plus one
Tom Waits cover) and should reconnect Rod with fans of classic records
like Gasoline Alley.

Three
tracks sing the praises of wife Penny Lancaster. ‘We met on a club
night at London’s Dorchester Hotel,’ Rod tells me. ‘I noticed the
phenomenal way she moved. No wonder she ended up on Strictly.’

There
is a darker side, too, inspired by Rod’s two bitter divorces,
particularly the 1999 separation from second ex Rachel Hunter. ‘Divorce
is the ruination of mankind,’ he says ruefully. ‘I know a lot about it,
and the devastation it causes to children.’

The
album’s centrepiece, Brighton Beach, is a heartfelt account of Rod’s
romance with student Susannah Boffey, which ended shortly after she gave
birth to Rod’s first daughter, Sarah.

Given up for adoption in 1963,
Sarah (now 49) has been reunited with Rod. ‘Sue has said she wants
nothing to do with me, but Sarah and I now call each other daughter and
dad. That was difficult before, as I wasn’t there to change nappies or
help with homework.’

In
2000, Rod faced a major health scare. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer, he
underwent surgery to remove a malignant growth and luckily made a
complete recovery. ‘It wasn’t cancer of the voice, but it was extremely
scary,’ he says. ‘It took nine months for the muscles to recover, and
then I had to teach myself how to sing again.’

Now, as he gears up for a summer tour, Rod is keen to blend his new songs into a set sprinkled with hits.

‘I’ve
been training hard,’ he says. ‘You can’t sing for two hours if you
aren’t fit. And people want action — they want to see me kicking those
footballs into the crowd.’
