Fear is contagiousThe first goal is always important but in this last-16 tie it was crucial. When you consider the fragility of the Arsenal side and the confidence of Bayern, an early goal for the Germans was the last thing Wenger wanted. Arsenal looked crippled by fear at times, while Bayern seemed invincible. To survive 664 minutes without conceding is amazing. Who let Kroos go?Don't blame Arsenal’s back four for Bayern’s opening goal. They have come in for a lot of stick this season but they don’t always get the protection they need. I could see that Toni Kroos was free as the move developed, and it is the job of a midfielder to pick him up that far out. Wenger packed his midfield and one of them should have been on Kroos. That said, it was a great finish.
Scared: Arsenal looked fearful at times
Bayern have bounced back in styleBayern have long been my tip for this season’s Champions League. How did they respond to losing last year’s final? They brought in Mandzukic, Martinez and Dante. Dante has been a revelation at centre half this season and between them they have made the Bavarians an even more formidable unit.
Who let him go? The Arsenal midfield failed to pick up Toni Kroos for the first goal
Visitor's quality will leave Wenger frustratedWhen Wenger studies the DVD of the game he will be hugely frustrated by the quality of Bayern Munich’s three goals. They are capable of brilliance but they did not have to be that clever or creative to score against Arsenal at the Emirates. Thomas Muller’s goal was a perfect example: a scrappy goal from a corner. The third goal was even worse: the result of a simple overlap by Lahm.
Key signing: Bayern signed Dante in the summer after losing the Champions League final
Doubt on ThomasFull backs are so important in the modern game. Beyond their defensive duties they provide an extra dimension in attack. Bayern had that in abundance in Lahm and Alaba. They were excellent. In Thomas Vermaelen, however, Arsenal had a real problem. A square peg in a round hole, he looked really uncomfortable out of position.
Video nasty: Arsene Wenger will not enjoy watching the DVD of the game back
Szczesny has not recovered from Euro redI don't think Szczesny has been the same goalkeeper since his red card in the opening game of Euro 2012. That was a crushing setback for the young Pole and he has been lacking in confidence ever since. He was at fault for Bayern’s second goal even if his defenders did him no favours.
Looking uncomfortable: Thomas Vermaelen did not look right playing out of position
Passing them byArsenal's passing style is something I really admire. They play the game the right way and in Wilshere they boasted one of the outstanding performers of the night. But when faced with a team as defensively strong as Bayern, Wenger needs to be more direct. For 45 minutes Arsenal really struggled.
Struggling: Wojciech Szczesny has not looked the same since his red card at the Euros
Positive play: Jack Wilshere was Arsenal's best player
